Heart and Vascular

The heart is a complex organ, and we rely on its proper function to survive. Therefore, it is important to go to an experienced, professional doctor for heart treatments. Timely and high-quality treatment can in some cases mean the difference between life and death. Developments are going fast. Minimally invasive surgeries replace open heart surgeries more often. Germany delivers the highest standards of heart diagnostics and treatment.

Advancements in heart surgery

Technological advancements have changed the landscape for heart surgery dramatically. Earlier, open heart surgery was the only surgical option to treat heart conditions. Now, many conditions that used to require open surgery can now be treated in a minimally-invasive procedure.
The most common minimally-invasive heart treatment is a heart catheter, where a cardiologist uses long tubes threaded through the blood vessels to access the heart from another part of the body. Heart catheters are commonly used for many different heart procedures, from ablation to angioplasty, and can give patients hope for a treatment option even when they are not candidates for open surgery.

Heart diagnostics

In order to determine the exact cause of your symptoms, a cardiologist will need to perform certain imaging procedures to develop a diagnosis. The most common diagnostic test for heart-related conditions is an echocardiogram, or EKG. The cardiologist performs a sonogram of the heart, either from the outside through the chest (TTE) or from the inside by inserting a probe down the patient’s throat under a light anaesthesia (TEE). This allows the specialist to get a real-time moving image of the heart and diagnose any underlying conditions affecting the heartbeat.
